PAYMENT: Full payment for the invoiced amount is due 2 weeks prior to course commencement. If you travel on a student visa, full payment is required prior to the issue of an Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE).

CANCELLATION POLICY: For the purpose of this policy a course is defined as the number of terms for which tuition has been prepaid. The enrolment fee is payable once only and is not refundable (exception, provider default). Tuition, OSHC fees, airport pick-up and homestay fees are refundable in full if the College is notified 30 days before the starting date. Students cancelling less than 30 days, 70% of tuition fees are refundable. Refund requests must be made in writing to the College. All tuition, OSHC and material fees refunded if student visa is rejected by DIAC. The original eCoE must be returned with the refund request. No refund is payable after you have commenced studying. Course fees are not transferable to another person or institution (exception, where the offer of place is withdrawn or SACE is unable to provide the tuition for which the offer has been made). If you wish to leave your homestay at any time you are required to give 1 weeks notice. Refunds will be provided to students within 4 weeks if student defaults and within 2 weeks if provide defaults. If you enrolled through an agent, the fees will be refunded to that agent. In the event SACE is unable to deliver your course in full after payment has been received SACE will refund the balance of course fees received within two weeks. Alternatively you may choose an alternate course of equal value. This agreement and the availability of complaints and appeals processes, does not remove the right of the student to take action under Australia's consumer protection laws. Personal information may be made available by SACE to Commonwealth and State agencies, the ESOS Assurance Fund Manger and Tuition Assurance Scheme. The Director General Education (Qld) has power under the Act to suspend or cancel the registration of a provider or a course; and, students concerned about the conduct of a provider may contact officers of the department involved in the administration of the Act.

IDEMNITY AND RELEASE: In consideration of the South Australian College of English, Tasmanian College of English and Whitsundays College of English hereafter referred to as ‘SACE’ accepting my application for enrolment as a student and providing tuition to me, I agree that I will not hold it, and/or its employees, and/or agents responsible or liable for and will not make any claim against them for any loss, damage, death or injury which I may suffer or cause as a result of or in connection with or during the period of: (a) my attendance at any premises owned, operated or controlled by SACE; and/or (b) my attendance at any activity (whether sporting, cultural, social, education, recreational or otherwise) organised by or on behalf of or with the assistance of SACE or any activity of which SACE has any knowledge and/or any accommodation whether short term or long term arranged for me by SACE. On behalf of myself, my executors, administrators and assigns, I herby release SACE and/or its employees, and/or agents from loss, damage, death or injury and from any actions, claims and demands which, if I had not entered into this Agreement, I might otherwise have been entitled to take or make in respect of any such loss, damage, death or injury and I hereby indemnify SACE and/or its employees, and/or agents against any such liability. I agree that this Agreement shall be governed in all respects by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the States of Tasmania, South Australia and Queensland, in the Commonwealth of Australia.

The South Australian College of English (SACE Adelaide) has conducted University of Cambridge TESOL courses (CELTA) since 1992. The Tasmanian College of English (SACE Hobart) has been an approved Cambridge Teacher Training Centre since 1998 and has conducted CELTA courses from this date. The Whitsundays College of English (SACE Airlie Beach) is also an approved Cambridge Teacher Training Centre for CELTA courses.

The prestigious CambridgeESOL-CELTA was previously known as the Cambridge RSA CTEFLA. Four-week intensive full time courses are available throughout the year. Introduction courses to TESOL and Grammar Refresher courses are also run through our teacher training department. The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is administered through the University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate and is moderated by assessors inducted by Cambridge University ensuring high standards worldwide.

The Cambridge CELTA is the best known TEFL / TESL / TEFOL / TESOL / ELT qualification of its kind in the world, and is often requested by employers nationally and internationally.


The CambridgeESOL-CELTA [Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is an international TEFL / TESL / TEFOL / TESOL / ELT training certificate course. Over 9,000 people a year participate in CELTA courses in approved centres in countries all over the world. All the successful participants receive a certificate from Cambridge University.

Originally called the RSA Certificate the programme changed name to RSA/Cambridge CTEFLA in 1985 and changed again in 1996 to RSA/Cambridge CELTA and in 2001 became the Cambridge CELTA. It is now known as the CambridgeESOL-CELTA. [Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages]


Due to the rigorous annual approval process and constant moderation of courses the CELTA is highly regarded worldwide; Cambridge University being well known throughout the world.

The CELTA is recognised by:

  • TEFL / TESL / TEFOL / TESOL / ELT (English language teaching) employers around the world
  • English Language Colleges in Australia,
  • many ministries of education
  • government bodies such as the British Council
  • TESOL, IATEFL, EA and other major professional organisations.

It is also well regarded by organisations such as JET, and Volunteers Abroad.


CELTA is given credit points for courses at a number of Australian universities.

Selection of candidates is based on an application task and a pre-course interview. If applicants have been successful, they will receive an offer of a place in the mail.

Candidates are also required to complete a compulsory pre-course learning task and:

  • To be 20 years old by the commencement date of the course. (Candidates can be accepted over 18 at the centre's discretion.)
  • To have a good standard of education - the minimum requirement is university entry. (Preference will be given to applicants with a degree.)
  • To undertake to attend all sessions of the course at the prescribed times. (UCLES regulations prohibit the awarding of certificates in cases of unsatisfactory attendance.)
  • Non-native speakers require an English Proficiency level of IELTS 8.

Please note: Fulfilling entry requirements does not automatically guarantee a place.



  • Every centre must undergo an annual inspection to be registered to run courses.
  • An outside assessor inducted and approved by Cambridge assesses every course run by a centre.
  • Courses provide expert instruction in methodology and language analysis by Cambridge approved trainers.
  • A minimum of 120 contact hours and an additional 80 hours for home study.
  • A minimum of 2 trainers per course and a maximum of 1 trainer per 6 candidates.
  • Candidates are involved in sixty hours of practice teaching which includes planning, implementation, observation of peers and experienced teachers, reflection on their teaching practice and feedback from trainers.
  • Six hours of individual observed and assessed practice teaching, conducted in classes with non-native speaking students, is included in every course.
  • A minimum of 6 hours observing experienced classroom teachers.
  • Training is provided based on the best of current teaching practice and constantly updated. The approach can be adapted to cater to the needs of students in a variety of contexts and can also be adapted for children and teenagers.
  • Only people who meet the performance criteria are issued a certificate.
